About Nate Terrell, LCSW

I received my Masters Degree from the Jane Addams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1982 and licensure in clinical social work from New Jersey in 1994. I subsequently worked as a therapist, supervisor and program director in a number of counselling agencies until 1999, when I began my current private therapy practice in my home office in Mullica Hill, New Jersey.

I also teach Interpersonal Communication at Temple University where I love the opportunity to help my students learn strategies, skills and concepts they can use to communicate more effectively with their family members, friends, partners and colleagues.

Finally, Dr. Anita Foeman (my wife) and I have provided training for nonprofit organizations, academic institutions and corporations for the past 30 years through our company, Organizational Growth. Our many training topics include cross-cultural competence, conflict resolution, principle-centered leadership, stress/time management, eliminating bullying, effective communication and building community. I also provide training for both adults and children in schools on how to achieve self-compassion.

A huge part of my life for the past 27 years has been learning from and caring for my daughter, Nicole, who has a form of autism called Retts Syndrome. In fact, I wrote an article about this experience entitled, Lessons from Nikki, a version of which was published in You Will Dream New Dreams, edited by Stanley Klein and Kim Schieve. (Click here to readLessons from Nikki.)  I am on a mission to create a world where people like Nicole are celebrated for their inherent worth and unique individuality, regardless of their ability or level of achievement.

After spending most of my life believing that I had to put aside my own needs to take of others, I finally realized that I do not have to choose between being self-compassionate and compassionate to others. I have learned that I can do both at the same time which provides me with a deep sense of abundance and meaning. Fortunately, the more self-compassionate I am, the more positive energy I have to care for and meet the needs of others. 

I have written Achieving Self-Compassion: Giving Yourself the Gifts of Happiness and Inner Peace to share what I have learned from teaching my clients and myself to develop self-compassion. I am passionate about helping others become self-compassionate through the strategies I discuss in this book as well as the coaching, training and therapy I provide.  I am excited that you have found your way to this website and hope it helps you experience greater happiness and peace of mind that you can enjoy and pass onto others.
